Allen-Bradley PowerFlex 525 inverter is an extremely popular inverter because of its very high quality, it supports many different control types including Modbus-RTU (built-in DSI-RS485 port). support communication up to 1200m.

Today plc247.com will guide you to use Allen-Bradley’s main PLC MicroLogix 1400 to control PowerFlex 525 via Modbus-RTU in a simple and easy to understand way.

MicroLogix 1400 & PowerFlex 525 “Wiring Diagram”

+ You can use Module 1763-NC01 for easy wiring or connect directly to the RS485 port of MicroLogix-1400 PLC (if not available).

Allen-Bradley PowerFlex 525 “Modbus RTU” Setting

To be able to control the inverter with Modbus RTU, in addition to the basic parameters of the inverter, we need to install the following communication parameters:

PowerFlex 525 Registers Address for Control
Note: MicroLogix 1400 Address = “VFD Address (Dec) + 1

>>> VFD Control Address = 8192 (Dec) + 1 = 8193

  • Set Word 8193 = 8 : Reset VFD
    = 18 : Forward Run
    = 34 : Reverse Run
    = 1 : Stop

>>> VFD Frequency Reference Address = 8193 (Dec) + 1 = 8194

PowerFlex 525 Registers Address for Monitoring

We will read the 5 main parameters of the inverter with a single command starting with the following address:

  • Frequency Command Address = 8450 (Dec) + 1 = 8451
