How to Disable Windows Defender Security Center

Windows Defender is a free antivirus program that is pre-installed by Microsoft on Windows. However, not everyone likes to use this built-in antivirus software and not everyone knows how to turn it off, along with some automation software when installed will be forced to turn it off. Today plc247.com will show you how to turn off Windows Defender on Windows-10 and Windows-7 in a simple way.

1. Disable it using Local Group Policy

If you use Windows-10 Professional or other versions such as Enterprise or Education, you can use the Local Group Policy Editor to completely disable Windows Defender on your computer.

+ Step 1: Press the Windows + R key combination to open the Run command window

+ Step 2: On the Run command window, type gpedit.msc into it and press Enter or click OK to open the Local Group Policy Editor window

+ Step 3: In the Local Group Policy Editor window, navigate to the following key: Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Defender > Turn off Windows Defender

+ Step 4: Select Enabled > Apply > OK to disable Windows Defender

After completing the steps, if you notice you will see the Windows Defender icon still displayed in the system tray. To remove this icon, simply restart your computer.

If you want to reactivate Windows Defender, follow the same steps, and in step 4 select the Not configured option, restart your computer to apply the changes.

2. Disable by Registry Editor

If using Windows 10 Home, you cannot access the Local Group Policy Editor. However, you can still disable Windows Defender by using the Registry

+ Step 1: Press Windows + R key combination to open the Run command window, then type regedit into it and press Enter (or click OK) to open the Registry.

+ Step 2: On the Registry window, navigate to the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SOFTWARE > Policies > Microsoft > Windows Defender

+ Step 3: If DWORD DisableAntiSpyware is not found, right-click on any empty space, then select New => DWORD (32-bit) Value.

+ Step 4: Name this new key DisableAntiSpyware

+ Step 5: Double click on the new key you just created, set the value in the Value Data frame from 0 to 1

In the last step, you just need to reboot the computer and enjoy the results. In case you want to turn on Windows Defender again, you just need to access it in the same order as above and change the value of the key from 1 to 0 to be back.

3. Temporarily disable by Settings

+ Step 1: Open the Settings application

+ Step 2: On the Settings window, find and click Update & Security

+ Step 3: Next, click on Windows Defender

+ Step 4: Switch the optional Real-time protection status to OFF
