IoT protocols – Part1 Bluetooth

Written by plc247.com

In the process of developing IoT applications (Internet of Things), choosing the right connection protocol standard is a quite a headache problem for electrical and electronic engineers. Currently, there are many communication technologies known as Wifi, Bluetooth, Zigbee and 2G / 3G / 4G mobile networks … and these are emerging technologies as a reasonable choice in self-contained applications. Building automation, smart home, … Depending on applications and factors such as communication range, data transmission volume, security requirements, energy for the battery system, … will decide to choose one or more appropriate communication methods. Today, plc247.com will list IoT protocols for development engineers to learn and choose.

Bluetooth:

One extremely important short-distance communication technology is Bluetooth. Currently, bluetooth appears in most devices such as computers, phones / smartphones, etc. and it is expected to be the key for special IoT products, allowing device communication with smartphones.

Currently, BLE – Bluetooth Low Energy – or Bluethooth Smart is a protocol used significantly for IoT applications. More importantly, along with a transmission distance similar to Bluetooth, BLE is designed to consume a lot less power. Isn’t it great, guys?

However, BLE is not really designed for applications that transfer files and will be more suitable for small data blocks. It has a huge advantage in the current context, smartphones are indispensable devices of each person. According to Bluetooth SIG, more than 90% of smartphones with Bluetooth are now embedded, including IOS and Android operating systems.

Technical information about Bluetooth 4.2:

+ Frequency: 2.4 GHz

+ Range: 50-150m (Smart / BLE)

+ Data transmission: 1Mbps
